Weight Loss Myth - Working Out First Thing In The Morning Will Burn More Calories

Working out on an empty stomach is simply not a good idea. There are some theories that promote working out first thing in the morning, before eating anything. The thinking is that this will burn more fat, since you haven't given your body any food to take calories from. But this simply isn't true. In fact, working out this way will not only make your workouts less beneficial because you will be lacking the energy you need to actually get in an intense workout, your body will start using muscle to take it's energy from and you don't want that!

The reason we call it breakfast, is to "break the fast" after hours of sleeping. When we wake up our bodies need to be replenished with water, and lots of it. A good rule of thumb is to have breakfast within an hour of waking up and make sure that you include protein in this meal. Studies have shown that those who include at least 30% of protein in their first meal have lower body fat percentages. Exercising when your body is dehydrated and hasn't been given any nutrients is going to make it much harder to exercise. Without energy from healthy food, your muscles won't have the fuel they need to exercise. For many people, even the thought of working takes energy. If you don't have fuel for your workout you are going to be in misery, and more prone to injury. Our bodies need fuel to function properly, especially for a good, enjoyable workout.
I am however, a huge fan of exercising in the morning! I love to exercise an hour to two after I have eaten, because a good workout in the morning gives me all the energy I need for a busy day ahead. And by working out in the morning and "getting it over with" doesn't allow you to come up with a million reasons or excuses why you can't get your workout in. But of course, not on an empty stomach.
I have a lot of clients say to me, "Kate, I just can't eat food first thing in the morning, I'm not hungry and I don't feel like eating." I can appreciate this, so what I suggest to them is that they have some form of protein shake, with a half a banana, or a handful of berries thrown in.
You don't want your workouts to feel like chores, so make sure you have the energy to do them!
